Over (lots of) years, I’ve only had a couple of flats. One was a non-patchable tear in the tube, and the other would have involved lots of work at the roadside. So, in both cases, i elected to walk 5-10 miles home (one with rain clouds threatening). These airless tires absolutely remove flats from the equation. Yes, one of those tires is slightly heavier than a conventional tire and tube, but if you remove the (now unnecessary) tire pump, the weight is essentially a wash. There are 2 downsides, however. First, the rolling resistance is quite perceptably greater. Feels as if you up-shifted 2 gears. And (my bioassay of choice) – I use a U-shaped segment of my usual bike ride. With normal tires, I could just about coast to the top of the 2nd hill. Not even close with these guys. I called Tannus directly, and they said that indeed resistance is higher. They offered to send me a replacement set of a different diameter, but did suggest that with maybe 100 miles’ riding, resistance might fall. I kept at it with the original set, and it feels better. Most likely, I think, because the exercise made me stronger! The other issue is that the “medium” hardness, supposedly equivalent to 80 psi, feels a lot harder, with jarring road vibrations. Be sure your seat is cushioned! Overall, I’m “sorta glad” I got them. Depending on your priorities (I hate walking my bike in the rain), they rate between 2 and 5.
